Course Overview:
In this Portuguese 2 online course, students will be able to talk about past events, describe physical and emotional states, identify and compare people and things, express affirmation, negation, share their opinions, give orders, instructions, commands, tips and advice, talk about daily routines, and talk about diets and recipes. Students will be exposed to simple videos, songs, and authentic materials. The instructors will foster and support students’ growing ability to identify holidays, religions, culinary traditions, and perspectives of Portuguese-speaking countries. The main grammatical focus of the
course is to use the past perfect, imperfect, continuous, and imperative; understanding the difference between verbs ser vs. estar and saber vs. conhecer, and preposition por vs. para; and using comparisons of inequality and equality.
The central themes of the course are housing, household items and domestic chores, traditions and feasts, clothing, sports, hobbies, and invitations to events. The student learning outcomes of this level are to be able to describe their homes and their physical and emotional states; point out or identify people and things; express ongoing actions and descriptions in the past; go shopping for clothes and groceries; give orders, instructions, commands, tips, and advice; compare people, things and daily routines; and make, accept and refuse invitations.
