Teacher Spotlight: Timothy du-Vall Brown
March 11, 2026
Meet Timothy du-Vall Brown in this Holston Academy Teacher Spotlight and discover how personalized online learning helps students build confidence, communication skills, and academic success.
At Holston Academy, our teachers do more than guide students through coursework, they help students discover confidence in their abilities and take ownership of their learning. We’re highlighting Timothy du-Vall Brown in our latest teacher spotlight, a teacher who brings that mindset to every student he teaches.
With more than 15 years of experience in language education, Timothy teaches a wide range of subjects at Holston, including Spanish, French, Psychology, Physical Education, Nutrition, and other electives. While the subjects may vary, his goal for students remains the same: helping them recognize what they’re capable of.
For him, teaching has always been rooted in connection and growth.
“Language learning changed my life,” he shares. “I wanted to give students that same sense of possibility and connection to the world.”
Meeting Students Where They Are
Timothy was drawn to Holston Academy because of the school’s commitment to personalized learning and meaningful relationships between teachers and students.
“I’ve worked in language education for over 15 years in both in-person and virtual settings,” he explains. “Holston stood out to me because of the individualized support and the genuine relationships teachers build with students.”

In his virtual classroom, Timothy focuses on creating a structured and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable participating and growing. His teaching style centers on clear expectations, patience, and encouragement; especially when students are trying something new.
“I try to create a supportive, relationship-centered environment,” he says. “Students grow the most when they feel encouraged and understood.”
Online learning also gives Timothy the opportunity to support students who may need a different pace or a more flexible schedule.
“Online learning opens doors for students who need flexibility, safety, or a different pace,” he explains. “It allows me to meet students where they are and help them succeed in a way that fits their lives.”
Building Confidence in the Virtual Classroom
A big part of Timothy’s work is helping students feel comfortable using their voices, especially in language classes.
Through interactive speaking activities, short challenges, polls, and discussions, he encourages students to participate and practice communication skills in a supportive environment.
“The more students participate, the more confident they become,” he says.
Some of his favorite moments as a teacher come when he sees students push past their initial hesitation and realize how much progress they’ve made.
“I’ve had students who were too shy to speak at first eventually lead full conversations in Spanish or French,” Timothy recalls. “Watching that confidence bloom is the best part of my job.”
Families are often surprised by how personal the online learning experience can be. Timothy makes it a priority to check in regularly with students, celebrate their achievements, and create space for genuine conversation.
“Even online, students need to feel seen and heard,” he says.
Supporting Students as a Team
One aspect of Holston Academy that Timothy especially appreciates is the collaborative approach between teachers and Academic Coaches. Together, they work to track student progress, communicate with families, and make sure every learner has the support they need.
“The level of care really stands out,” he explains. “Teachers and Academic Coaches truly know their students and work together to support them.”
That teamwork helps create a learning environment where students feel supported not only academically, but personally as well.
A Life Beyond the Classroom
When he’s not teaching, Timothy lives in Miami and enjoys staying active and spending time with family and friends.
Students may be surprised to learn that he also teaches group fitness classes including HIIT, yoga, and pilates, and loves the energy of a good workout.

He also has a deep interest in language beyond the classroom, often spending hours listening to different accents and dialects from around the world.
“I love studying the way people speak and express themselves,” he says. “Language is endlessly fascinating.”
His ideal weekend includes a quiet morning with tea and a book, time outdoors, and meaningful conversations with friends.
If he had the chance to travel anywhere, Timothy would happily return to France or Spain, immersing himself once again in the language and culture.
A Message for Holston Students
When asked what advice he would share with Holston students, Timothy keeps his message simple and encouraging:
“Stay consistent, communicate when you need help, and believe in your ability to grow.”
It’s a mindset that reflects the philosophy he brings to teaching every day.
“Progress, not perfection.”
Through patience, encouragement, and a strong commitment to student growth, Timothy helps learners build the confidence and skills they need to succeed.
And at Holston Academy, that kind of support makes all the difference.
