Student Spotlight: Meet Kyle Golfer, Scholar, and Goal-Getter

August 7, 2025

From morning workouts to evening study sessions, Kyle brings the same focus and dedication to his academics as he does to the golf course. Learn more about 10th grader, Kyle, in our latest student spotlight blog post!

At Holston Academy, we’re proud to support students who chase big dreams, on the green and in the classroom. This month, we’re shining a spotlight on Kyle, an 11th grade student whose passion for golf has shaped both his academic path and personal growth. From early morning workouts to evening study sessions, Kyle exemplifies the drive and discipline it takes to excel as both a scholar and athlete.

From Connecticut to the Golf Course

Kyle and his family live in Madison, Connecticut. A talented junior golfer, Kyle has been traveling for tournaments across the region, especially during colder months when New England’s weather keeps golfers off the course. He competes weekly during peak season from spring through summer and maintains a rigorous schedule that includes workouts, drills, mental coaching, and tournament prep.

“Golf has so many components to it, which makes every shot unique,” Kyle shared. “You can play the same course in different ways and in various weather patterns. That challenge keeps me coming back.”

Why Holston Academy?

For Kyle and his family, flexibility was key. Public school’s long hours and idle classroom time didn’t match the pace of a student-athlete training for collegiate competition. His mother Bailey explained that online learning offers him the structure and autonomy to stay on top of coursework while pursuing golf at a high level.

“Our son is thriving in this environment and producing some outstanding work while improving his game,” Bailey said. “He’s become more self-sufficient and takes ownership of his goals.”

Holston’s flexible coursework and easy access to teacher support means that Kyle can study wherever he goes, whether that’s at home, on the road, or between rounds.

Daily Life: Discipline + Drive

Kyle’s days are mapped with intention. From early morning strength training to evening study sessions, he balances academics with athletic training in a way that reflects his college-level ambitions.

A typical day looks something like this:

  • 6:30 AM: Workout
  • 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM: Golf practice
  • 2:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Schoolwork
  • 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM: Additional studying or practice

“Holston allows me to batch my work into specific subjects so I can work through modules efficiently,” he said. “The ability to customize my schedule is one of my favorite parts.”

Favorite Subjects & Support

Kyle gravitates toward AP® Human Geography, enjoying the opportunity to explore global cultures and population trends. He also gave a shoutout to his Academic Coach Mr. Niemand and favorite teacher, Mr. Fregault for their guidance and support.

“Mr. Niemand helped me when I finished Semester 1 early—I was able to start Semester 2 over holiday break,” Kyle said. “He was encouraging and supportive.”

Words of Wisdom

Kyle and Bailey are both advocates for online learning… especially for student-athletes. They encourage families to view it not as isolating, but empowering.

“Online school allows a student to free up more time for social endeavors, team sports, and part-time jobs,” Bailey said. “Students lead the education experience, rather than conforming to a top-down methodology.”

For Kyle, that independence is preparing him for what’s next. He plans to study Business Administration and Finance in college while continuing to play competitive golf.

“Holston’s workload is challenging—and that’s a good thing. It’s helping me build the balance I’ll need to succeed in college and beyond.”

And his mom agrees. “Holston isn’t just an online school—it’s more akin to a private school. The course selection is outstanding and teachers truly meet students where they are.”

Empowering Students to Lead Their Learning

At Holston Academy, students like Kyle remind us what’s possible when learning meets life. He’s not waiting for success to come to him, he’s building it one tournament, one assignment, and one goal at a time.

For families wondering if online education can support big dreams, Kyle’s story offers a resounding yes. Holston isn’t just flexible, it’s transformational.
