Get Back on Track with Online Summer Classes

March 13, 2025

It’s easy and convenient to get back on track academically with online summer classes for high school students! In fact, online summer classes are popular with high school students for a variety of reasons.

Summer school isn’t really summer school anymore. Back in the day, kids who were way behind in their schoolwork or needed to improve their grades had to, quite literally, go to school and sit in classes all day. Today, it’s so much easier and more convenient to get back on track with online summer classes for high school students! In fact, online high school summer classes are popular with students for a variety of reasons.

Use the summer to catch up before the next school year

One of the many benefits of online high school summer classes is that students can take as many, or as few, classes as they need to catch up on their credits. And because they’re online classes, they can be taken anywhere. This is especially helpful during the summer when many families travel and/or take vacations. As long as the student has a computer and an internet connection, taking a summer class is easy!

Another advantage of online summer classes for high school students is that the course can be completed with fewer distractions than there normally are during the school year. Think about it–a full load of classes, extracurricular activities, your busy high school routine. It’s not the ideal time to take (or retake) a class you need because it doesn’t offer you enough time to study and focus on the subject at hand.

During the summer, however, you’re free of those distractions, which gives you ample time to really learn the material and master it. Plus, if you take an online summer class through Holston Academy, we offer one-to-one teacher support and add-on tutoring services to give students the confidence to succeed in their summer courses.

Retake a class over summer online

For some high school students, retaking a class over the summer is a necessity; for others, it’s more of a luxury to get ahead on credits. But for those who need to take a summer course in order to earn enough credits to graduate or move on to the next grade level, doing so online can make life much easier.

Summer classes for high school students also tend to be much smaller than a typical class during the school year. This is a major benefit for students for a couple of reasons. For one, fewer students generally means fewer class distractions and interruptions online. More importantly, smaller class sizes allow each student to receive more individualized attention and support from their teacher. This can be a game-changer for students who may be struggling in a particular subject.

Speaking of subjects, Holston Academy offers a wide range of core high school online courses students may need to take to earn credits, advance to the next level, or graduate. For American students, these often include:

  • Biology: By introducing students to the scientific method and the major concepts of biology from an historical and practical viewpoint, this course serves as a foundation for future biology–and other science–courses. Biology can be a difficult subject to learn, so taking our online class during the summer can set students up for success.
  • Algebra: Our Algebra 1 online summer course begins by introducing students to the world of algebra through expressions and equations. Again, algebra is a tricky subject to master–especially for those not blessed with math-oriented brains. Taking this algebra online course over the summer gives students more time to absorb the concepts, ask questions, and get the support they need to succeed.
  • American History: Most American students are required to pass an American History class. Taking our American History online course during the summer is a smart decision for students who need these credits. During this course, students will learn about the discovery, development, and growth of the United States.

Of course, these are just a few of the hundreds of online courses Holston Academy offers students during the summer. Take a look at our full course catalog here.

How to catch up with online summer classes

At this point, you may be thinking, “This all sounds great, but how do I sign up?” Great question. No matter where you’re looking for high school summer classes, you should speak with the school for a few reasons:

  1. To make sure their credits for the online summer class gets transferred to their school
  2. To ask any questions you may have about an online high school summer class you may be considering
  3. To determine whether the school is accredited

Having the answers to those questions will help you narrow down your choice of schools, whether they’re in-person or online. What should you look for in a school that’s offering summer courses for high school students?

  • How qualified are the instructors? As with any class, you want to make sure the teachers are knowledgeable and experienced with the subject they’re instructing.
  • In-person or online? Online classes can be more beneficial than in-person instruction during the summer because of their flexibility. Most online courses can be taken at the student’s convenience, with an instructor available to assist and answer questions. In-person summer courses may require students to be there at specific times on specific days, leaving little room for flexibility. However, if students prefer a more hands-on learning experience, they may prefer in-person summer classes.
  • How much does it cost? Do some research and comparison pricing of the schools you’re considering. Certain price points may eliminate a few of those schools fairly quickly.
  • What is the school’s reputation? Check out online reviews, ask friends who may have taken summer courses, and don’t be afraid to ask the schools themselves why you should enroll with them. Above all else, you want to be sure the school you’re paying for is worth the investment and that you’ll get what you want and need out of the summer class.

Overall, there are plenty of options when it comes to catching up in school through summer classes. Doing research on potential schools can help answer many of your questions. The rest may simply come down to personal preference.
