Smiling Utah Family

The importance of providing a high-quality education to all children is a high priority in the state of Oklahoma. With that in mind, the state developed a Parental Choice Tax Credit, which provides Oklahoma parents the freedom to choose the best education path for their child and use a refundable tax credit to directly pay for the school that meets their child’s needs. These funds can be used for a Holston Academy enrollment. For more information, fill out our form and someone will be in touch!

What Is a Parental Choice Tax Credit?

Parents may receive a refundable tax credit of a minimum of $5,000 up to a maximum of $7,500 per child to cover the cost of private school tuition and fees at an accredited private school. Tax credits are tiered based on the household income for the second year preceding (the 2022 Adjusted Gross Income for the 2024 tax credit). It is highly recommended that taxpayers keep their receipts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible?

Parents may keep any amount of the credit that exceeds their state tax liability. Payments are disbursed in two equal installments, so parents do not have to front the cost of tuition at the beginning of the school year.

How does the tax credit work?

Parents in Oklahoma may use this refundable tax credit to pursue the education option that best fits their child. Qualifying expenses for students attending an accredited private school include tuition and fees. Qualifying expenses for students educated at home include tuition and fees for non-public online learning programs; academic tutoring services provided by an individual or a private academic tutoring facility; textbooks, curriculum, or other instructional materials including, but not limited to, supplemental materials or associated online instruction required by an education service provider; and fees for nationally standardized assessments including, but not limited to, assessments used to determine college admission and advanced placement examinations; as well as tuition and fees for tutoring or preparatory courses for the assessments.

Can Holston Academy students apply?

What are the rules for applying for a Parental Choice Tax Credit in Oklahoma?

Parents in Oklahoma must:

  • Only claim the credit for qualified expenses to provide an education for an eligible student
  • Ensure no other person is claiming a credit for the eligible student
  • Not claim the credit for an eligible student who enrolls as a full-time student in a public school district, public charter school, public virtual charter school, or magnet school
  • Comply with rules and requirements established by the Commission for administration of the Oklahoma Parental Choice Tax Credit Program
  • Retain receipts, and in cases of homeschoolers, submit receipts

(Eligible students may accept a scholarship from the Lindsey Nicole Henry Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Program while participating in the Oklahoma Parental Choice Tax Credit Program.)

How do I apply and access funds?

Apply online and follow these steps:

  • Parents/guardians must request an Enrollment Verification Form for each student from the school their student(s) attends or plans to attend. An email containing the form will be sent directly to the taxpayer on behalf of the participating school, which must be uploaded during the application process.
  • To claim the Parental Choice Tax Credit, the taxpayer must apply online at www.parentalchoice.ok.gov. Taxpayers will need to upload a completed Enrollment Verification Form for each student as part of the application. Non-guardian applicants will also need to submit a completed Parental Request Form.
  • Once verification is complete, the taxpayer will be notified about the status of the application. In most cases, taxpayers can expect to hear about their application approval status within 14 days.
  • Taxpayers should submit their receipts to the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC). The OTC will send checks directly to the school. While the payment is sent to the school, the checks will be made payable to the taxpayer submitting the application. Taxpayers should either sign the check over to the school or collect the check from the school if tuition and fees have already been paid.
