Social Studies 7: Medieval & Early Modern History

Course Overview:

Holston Academy’s Social Studies 7: Medieval & Early Modern History online course invites middle school students to explore how societies across the world evolved from the Middle Ages into the foundations of the modern world. Through interactive lessons, historical investigation, and critical analysis, students examine how cultural, political, religious, and technological developments shaped civilizations and influenced how people lived, governed, and interacted. This accredited online history course builds strong research, reasoning, and comparison skills while helping students make meaningful connections between the past and the present.

Semester 1:

In Semester 1, students investigate the Medieval world through a global lens, exploring major civilizations and cultures across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. Using historical inquiry skills, learners examine Islamic civilizations, Medieval China, sub-Saharan Africa, Japan, and Europe from 476–1500 CE. Students analyze how belief systems, trade, technology, governance, and social structures influenced daily life and cultural exchange. This semester emphasizes cause-and-effect relationships and helps students understand how medieval societies laid the groundwork for future global developments.

Semester 2:

Semester 2 shifts focus to the transformative periods that bridged the Medieval and modern worlds. Students explore the Renaissance and Reformation, followed by the Age of Exploration, Scientific Revolution, and Enlightenment, examining how new ideas reshaped politics, religion, science, and society. Through guided analysis and discussion, learners connect historical events to modern systems of government, economics, and culture. The course concludes by drawing direct parallels between medieval developments and the modern world, helping students see history as a continuous and evolving story.
