Science 8: Physical Science
Course Overview:
Science 8: Physical Science is a two-semester online middle school science course offered through Holston Academy that introduces students to the fundamental principles of matter, energy, and motion. Students strengthen scientific reasoning by using the tools and methods of science to investigate phenomena, analyze data, and construct evidence-based explanations. Through interactive lessons, virtual labs, and real-world applications, students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while building a strong foundation for high school chemistry and physics.
Semester 1:
In Semester 1, students explore the structure and properties of matter, beginning with a review of the nature of science and scientific investigation. The course examines physical and chemical changes in matter, the development of atomic theory, and the relationship between atomic structure and the periodic table. Students learn how periodic trends help predict element properties and study chemical bonds, compounds, and chemical reactions, gaining insight into how substances interact and form new materials. Throughout the semester, students apply Science and Engineering Practices (SEPs) to deepen understanding of core physical science concepts.
Semester 2:
In Semester 2, students investigate the relationship between matter and energy, beginning with motion and the forces that affect how objects move. The course explores different forms of energy, energy transfer, and conservation before examining electricity, magnetism, and electromagnetic forces. Students conclude the semester by studying waves, sound, and the electromagnetic spectrum, learning how energy travels and how wave behavior is applied in modern technology. Students continue applying SEPs-based inquiry to analyze real-world problems and make informed scientific decisions.
