Science 7: Earth & Space
Course Overview:
Science 7: Earth & Space is a two-semester online middle school science course offered through Holston Academy that explores the connections between Earth science, space science, and human activity. Students strengthen scientific thinking by applying the scientific method, using measurements, analyzing data, and explaining real-world phenomena. Through interactive lessons, virtual labs, and inquiry-based activities, students build a strong understanding of Earth’s systems, the solar system, and the universe while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills essential for future science learning.
Semester 1:
In Semester 1, students focus on scientific thinking and measurement while exploring key concepts in space science. Topics include Earth’s movements, seasons, the Moon, tides, solar and lunar eclipses, and the Sun’s role as the primary source of energy in the solar system. Students study planets, asteroids, comets, and meteors, learning how gravity governs their motion and interactions. The course expands beyond the solar system to explore stars, constellations, nebulae, the Milky Way, and distant galaxies, incorporating updated discoveries in space science. Students also develop geographic skills by learning how to use maps, globes, latitude, and longitude to identify locations on Earth.
Semester 2:
In Semester 2, students turn their focus to Earth science, beginning with Earth’s interior and the processes that shape the planet, including rocks and minerals, volcanoes, earthquakes, plate boundaries, and geologic history. Students explore surface processes such as weathering, erosion, soil formation, and Earth’s water systems, including the water cycle, oceans, and ocean currents. The semester also examines Earth’s atmosphere, air movement, and weather patterns before connecting these concepts to natural resources, pollution, biodiversity, and human impact on Earth. The course concludes with an introduction to technology design and science-related careers, helping students understand how scientific knowledge is applied in real-world professions.
