Life Science 6
Course Overview:
Life Science 6 is a two-semester online middle school science course offered through Holston Academy that introduces students to the study of living organisms and biological systems. Students explore key concepts in cell biology, heredity, ecology, human biology, and the diversity of life while learning how scientists investigate the natural world. Through hands-on virtual labs, interactive lessons, and inquiry-based activities, students develop essential scientific skills such as observing, classifying, measuring, analyzing data, and designing experiments, building a strong foundation for future science coursework.
Semester 1:
In Semester 1, students examine the basic characteristics of life and learn how living organisms are classified. The course explores invertebrates, vertebrates, and plant life, with a focused study of green plants and how they grow and function. Students are introduced to cell structure and function, gaining an understanding of cells as the building blocks of life. Throughout the semester, students practice essential scientific skills including observation, data collection, classification, and analysis while applying scientific reasoning to real-world biological questions.
Semester 2:
In Semester 2, students study heredity and adaptation, exploring how traits are passed from one generation to the next and how organisms change over time. The course examines ecosystems and ecological relationships, emphasizing the balance of nature and human interactions with the environment. Students also explore human body systems, including the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, endocrine, skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems, learning how these systems work together to support life and respond to the environment. Inquiry-based labs and activities continue to strengthen scientific thinking and problem-solving skills.
