AP® Music Theory

Course Overview:

In this AP® Music Theory online course, students will begin by establishing a strong foundation in essential music theory concepts, including notation, scales, key signatures, intervals, chords, and basic aural skills, all of which are crucial for success in the AP® Music Theory Exam. The course continues building upon this foundation by introducing more advanced topics like Roman Numeral Analysis, Figured Bass, Modulation, and Cadences, allowing students to deepen their understanding and proficiency in music theory. The course aims to provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of music theory, equipping them with the skills necessary to excel in the AP® Music Theory exam.

Semester A

The first semester examines the fundamental building blocks of music theory. Students who successfully complete this course will have a solid foundation in music theory language that includes Notation, Major and Minor Scales, Key Signatures, intervals, triads, 7th Chords, Inversions, Voicing, Part Writing, Sight Singing, and Basic Aural and Aictation skills. Semester A’s content and assignments focus on mastering these music fundamentals needed for the AP® Music Theory Exam.

Semester B

In the second semester, students are given the opportunity to build upon Semester 1 skills while diving into more complex concepts, such as Roman Numeral Analysis, Figured Bass, Modulation, Cadences, Secondary Chords, Musical Structure, Aural Skills, etc. Semester 2’s content and assignments delve deeper into the advanced content needed to complete the AP® Music Theory exam.
