Greek 1

Course Overview:

In this introductory Greek 1 online course, students will develop a basic understanding of the Greek language and lay the foundations for more advanced language skills in following courses. Students will learn to introduce themselves and others, describe where they live, people they know, and things they possess. They will learn how to cope in simple everyday situations such as buying goods, dealing with services, and accepting or rejecting invitations. Students will use a variety of authentic materials including simple videos, songs, signs, labels, and online language resources.

Students will learn how to communicate in short interactions with help. They will also be able to understand simple announcements, important information, directions, and instructions when there are repetitions and pauses. The most important outcome of this level is for students to develop strategies to understand the main idea and some key details while listening to short conversations and reading short sentences.

Grammar content includes but is not limited to regular and irregular nouns, adjectives, uninflected words (prepositions, conjunctions, adverbs, and interjections), comparative forms, pronouns, verbs, and some tenses. Students will also learn the alphabet, punctuation, syntax, and basic Greek grammar. The central themes of this level include topics related to real life situations like personal life (identity, residence, free time, entertainment, and health), daily life (activities inside and outside of their homes, nutrition, education, and public services, travel), and environment (fauna, flora, and weather).
