German 4
Course Overview:
In the German 4 online course, students will build upon and increase their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills that they began to acquire in previous German courses. Continued emphasis on high-level oral communicative skills is stressed through constant conversation. In addition, students will develop cultural awareness and become prepared to encounter real life situations outside of the classroom through in-class discussions of videos, Internet research, learning about cultural customs and
behavior, and by engaging with authentic materials. Grammar topics will include modal auxiliaries in past perfect, passive voice, past participles used as adjectives, verbs used as nouns, and word order with adverbials. Additional topics may include the differences in spoken vs written German.
The central themes of the course are political and social issues and policies, community, social, and cultural practices, and professional plans. The student learning outcomes of this level are to be able to understand written articles, speeches, and videos about prominent cultural figures; to make decisions about where to eat or what to watch by reading and understanding movie and restaurant reviews; and to write for personal enjoyment or report on community events.
